Your National Insurance record directly impacts your future State Pension.

If an individual has not contributed enough NI prior to reaching State Pension age, then voluntary NI contributions can be made to top up their contribution history. It is worth noting that voluntary contributions can only be made for the prior six tax years.

Do you need to make a payment by 5 April 2025?

Voluntary contributions can be made for prior tax years spanning back to 6 April 2018.

What can do you?

Check your National Insurance record

Check your records to see if there are any missing NI contribution periods.

This can be either online via your HMRC login or with the Pension Service at the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

or

  • Contact the DWP to establish the position.
The contact details for DWP are 0800 731 0175 if you are below state pension age and 0800 731 0469 if you’ve reached state pension age.

  • an 18 digit NI reference number
