The Egyptian pharmaceutical market at retail prices rose by a double-digit CAGR in US dollar terms in the current decade. It has been estimated that the market increased by five times during the past 20 years. Production is expected to rise as the healthcare system continues its transition towards modernization; Egypt is becoming an attractive market for multinational pharmaceutical companies focused on emerging markets.

The local industry produces EGP/US$ billion worth of pharmaceuticals per year. Official statistics peg the value of domestic pharmaceutical consumption in Egypt up to EGP 5 billion (approx. US$ 1 billion) per year. The expanding Egyptian pharmaceutical sector currently consists more than 60 firms and factories, including several high-technology manufacturing enterprises, distribution companies and more than 50 private investment corporations. With more than 10 multinationals and 30 indigenous companies, Egypt is the leading producer and consumer of pharmaceuticals in the region.
